The Out of the Darkness Overnight Experience is a 20-mile walk over the course of one night. Net proceeds benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, funding research, education, and awareness programs – both to prevent suicide and to assist those affected by suicide.

For my part, suicide has shaped me both personally and professionally. I have lost two students -- one of them my very first -- and my mentor: three individuals who had profound influence over my present course in life and are now erased from it by their own hands. But I am still here -- to share their stories, to fight with both fists to prevent one more person from abandoning hope.

In these bleak economic times, please do not feel ashamed to donate $1, $5, or any other amount you may deem inconsequential. Every single contribution helps, and is warmly appreciated. Furthermore, I will be performing a full recital in early June for the express purpose of raising funds for this walk; for every $25 you donate, I'll save a seat for you.

Shannon and I did that together before our wedding and have never looked back. We are now working on diet and exercise too! So much to live for, and this (and the AIDS marathon) are two GREAT causes.
