New York City Shorewalkers

One of our fellow Overnight Walkers, Gerald Matusiewicz, is part of an organization that specializes in promoting and preserving the waterfronts of New York City. Their mission is to hike along the shoreline of the metropolitan area and what better way to train for The Overnight than to join Gerald and his colleagues on multiple hikes throughout New York City. See below for more information!

Below are some upcoming Training Walks Gerald and the New York Shorewalkers organization agreed to share with our Overnight Community to help prepare for the Overnight Walk. For more information and questions about Shorewalkers, please contact Gerald directly at [email protected]. Please note that each training walk has a different leader who you can contact if you have questions regarding that specific training walk.

How to find us Meet at the bottom of the stairs of the Bronx Woodlawn last stop of the #4 train

Established in 1863, Woodlawn Cemetery has been called "a popular final resting place for the famous and powerful". It is a 400•acre non•sectarian cemetery -with over 310,000 individuals interred on its grounds. Over 100,000 people visit from all over the world each year.

Notable residents include - Duke Ellington, Irving Berlin, Herman Melville, Dorothy Parker, JC Penny, Joseph Pulitzer. Nelly Bly and so many more.

But more than its residents is the artistic and architectural significance of how they chose to be remembered. Designed by some of the leading architects of the time including James Gamble Rogers; Carriere and Hastings; McKim, Mead and White to name a few.

Join us on a private 4+ mile walk and meet some of the permanent residents. They include important civic leaders, actors on the stage and screen. musicians, entrepreneurs, philanthropists, financiers, suffragists, artists, writers and publishers. Learn about their contributions to society and about the artists and architects that designed and built their forever homes.

Led by Woodlawn Docent Joanna Cohlan, she even holds the keys that unlock some of these Mausolea for a peak inside! Many include Tiffany windows and other artistic wonders. The highlight is the Mausoleum of philanthropist, socialite and suffragist Alva Vanderbilt Belmont.

We will spend about 4 hours walking the grounds of this Class 2 Arboretum which include some of the most important specimen trees in New York. There will be much commentary.

A National Historic Landmark as quoted by the Parks Department, "the cemetery is distinguished by memorials that represent the largest and finest collection of funerary art in the country."

There is a $10. fee to cover the guide's gratuity and a donation to the cemetery payable at the event's start.

There are restrooms in the cemetery. No eating is permitted. You may bring lunch and snacks to consume when we leave. There are few restaurants nearby. Of course, water is encouraged. For more information please click here

5B5B - Five Boro 5 Brewery Walk

Saturday, June 14th, 2025 from 12:30 AM - 8:30 PM

Details

STILL PLENTY OF ROOM FOR MEMBERS WHO FOLLOW THE MODIFIED RSVP PROCESS; ONLY CLUELESS CASUAL CLICKERS STAY ON THE WAITLIST

Due to popular demand, yours truly will host the third annual epic Five Boro Five Brewery {5B5B) walk, which will be covered in just about 14 miles (not counting the ferry ride).

LEADER: Cameron Smith: [email protected], 908-672-9250

WALK DETAILS:

We will start at the Bronx Brewery at 12:30 leaving at 1:00 (we will allow 30 minutes at each brewery stop). We will walk about 5.5 miles via Randalls Island to our second stop in Queens, 3 miles from there to Brooklyn, 3 more miles to Manhattan, and 2 miles to the SI Ferry, where we will take a sunset cruise to our final brewery stop which is short walk from the ferry.

There will be food available at the breweries but you should order right away (and/or arrive early at the Bronx Brewery) so as not to hold up the group as we have a fairly tight schedule to maintain. You are also welcome to bring your own food which will save time and money. We will move at a moderate to brisk pace between breweries so keep that in mind before you sign up for this walk. There is no requirement to drink at each stop (smaller sizes are available) but this is also a judgement free walk (just like Vegas, what happens on 5B5B ..... )

HOW TO GET TO STARTING POINT:

Take the #6 Subway to the Cypress Avenue stop and walk a few blocks to the front entrance to Bronx Brewery at 856 E. 136th Street.

BRING: Hat, sunscreen, water, snacks, comfortable walking footwear, and extra pair socks (to avoid blisters if you are doing the whole 14 miles). For more details on this Training Walk please read here

Governors Island Tribute to Dr. James Williams (and the Jazz Age Lawn Party)

Sunday, June 15th, 2025 from 10:45 AM - 2:00 PM

Details

This a repeat of a walk given by Dr. Jim Williams, it is a tribute to his wonderful spirit and the inspiration that he provided for all Shorewalkers. Attendees can stay and enjoy the Jazz Age Lawn Party 2025 taking place that weekend on the Island.

Take the 10:30 am Governors Island Ferry from the Battery Maritime Building (10 South Street). You can book the Ferry online or at the BMB (check the Governors Island website for complete information). We will gather/meet at the Governors Island Welcome Center, see the map on the event page for location. While the Ferry is free (no charge) before 11:00 am on the weekends, I prefer to book my ticket on line in case the BMB staff asks to see it. I advise people to arrive by 10:10 am, as the Ferry will be crowded with flappers and hepcats ...

The description below is the one provided by Jim for his event:

5-6 miles 3 hours

Open year round, we will walk around various trails on the island. We will gather near the Governors Island Visitor Center after departing from the 10:30 AM ferry. There are NO tickets needed on Saturday before noon. There are various views of the harbor, Statue of Liberty as well as rich history of the island to share and explore. We will end at 2:00 on the island. You can take the ferry back to Manhattan or stay and explore more. For more details on this Training Walk please read here

While on this walk, we can reminisce about last month's battles of the Great Saunter.

There will not be a lunch break during the walk -- you can eat lunch after. Bring water, snacks.
