  • Why is The Overnight now virtual? Your safety and well-being is our top priority, and the current situation means we cannot guarantee them with an in-person event this year. Additionally, the City of New York has indefinitely cancelled all non-essential events, and in the past week the NYC Parks Department has terminated all event permits through June 30, 2020. Due to the volume of events in New York, the city is unable to reschedule to a later date in 2020.
  • Do I need to meet my individual fundraising minimum to participate virtually? No, there will not be a fundraising requirement to participate in the Virtual Overnight Experience, though you are welcome to continue your fundraising efforts. Our cause is more important than ever, and every dollar you raise allows AFSP to continue our life-saving work .
  • Can my family and friends join the Virtual Overnight? Yes! One of the benefits of creating a virtual experience is that we have the ability to reach even more people and show them what it means to be part of a community passionate about hope and healing. Anyone who’d like to join us for the 2020 Virtual Overnight Experience can register as a Virtual Participant online here. Those that have already registered do not need to register again to participate virtually.
  • Will we be walking all night in our hometown? No. As mentioned, your safety is our top priority and we strongly discourage anyone from walking at night (from sunset to sunrise) without the route support offered at The Overnight. We are working on incorporating a walk option into our Virtual Overnight Experience program - stay tuned for more information. We also encourage you to avoid walking in groups and to follow city guidelines regarding COVID-19.
  • What will the Virtual Overnight Experience look like?

The Virtual Overnight Experience will have three main components:

    • Physical: One of the top most important parts of The Overnight for our participants is walking 16+ miles or taking action for our important cause. We decided to partner with Kilter Rewards for you to track your actions throughout the month of June. From June 1- June 25, use the Kilter Rewards app to take action for suicide prevention. These actions can include: walking, running, biking, having a #RealConvo, yoga, and any wellness activities you participate in.

    • Event Weekend: The Overnight is important to us all, so we want to make sure you have the best experience possible during the Virtual Overnight Experience. We will email out the link and schedule of the program for June 20, 2020 and June 21, 2020. The link will also be available here for you, when it is ready. The event weekend is an important time to honor loved ones and ourselves, connect with our community, and experience hope and healing.

    • Social Media: We know not everyone uses social media, but in this time of physical distancing, we need a way for our community to come together to support one another. Social media is the easiest and quickest way for us to connect and share our Overnight experiences. If you don't have a social account, our social pages are public so you can check out your fellow participants' comments.

  • I previously said I would be unable to participate in this event. How can I change this to participate virtually? If you are virtually participating in The Overnight, please email your Walker Coach directly or email [email protected] so we can update your registration.
  • I registered as a Crew member. How will I participate during the Virtual event? The Crew prepares and manages the route during the Walk. With the move to virtual, both Walkers and Crew members will have access to the same programming components of the Virtual event. Stay tuned for more details.
  • I wanted to volunteer. Can I still participate? We encourage you to register for the Virtual event! Registration is free and everyone is welcome.
  • Should I cancel my hotel reservation? The host hotel, DoubleTree by Hilton New York Times Square West, is kind enough to cancel all reservations made using our group code. So, if you booked a room directly with the hotel using our group code, you do not have to worry and your reservation will be automatically cancelled on April 30. Also, if you would prefer you’re welcome to cancel your reservation yourself before April 30. If for some reason you would like to keep your reservation at the Doubletree, please email [email protected] by April 30 to let us know. If you booked a room at a different hotel, or using another service such as Expedia, AirBnB, etc., you will need to cancel your own reservation.
  • Will the Virtual Overnight Experience be the 25th Overnight Walk? No. We will recognize the next in-person Overnight Walk as our 25th Walk to honor this special milestone.
